سیال از پایین به بالا از طریق لوله متر فلومتر جریان می یابد. شناور تا زمانی بلند می شود که یک شکاف حلقوی بین حلقه متر و شناور مخروطی شکل که مطابق با جریان است ایجاد شود. نیروهای وارد بر شناور در حالت تعادل هستند. نیروهایی که عمدتاً بر روی شناور تأثیر می‌گذارند، بر اساس اصل ارشمیدس، نیروی جریان محیط و نیروی وزنی شامل شناوری هستند. هر موقعیت شناور مربوط به مقدار جریان اندازه گیری شده در حین کالیبراسیون است که به یک مقیاس منتقل می شود. فلومتر منطقه متغیر BGN از یک لوله متر با اتصالات، یک حلقه متر و یک شناور مخروطی تشکیل شده است. با استفاده از آهنربا، موقعیت شناور به یک آهنربای دنباله دار محصور شده، که به یک محور اشاره گر نصب شده است، منتقل می شود. موقعیت دومین آهنربای دنباله دار حلقوی نصب شده بر روی محور اشاره گر به وسیله اشاره گر به ترازو منتقل می شود.
